Welcome to the RCDesign Lab Blog!
As we step into 2025, we’re thrilled to launch this blog—a space dedicated to exploring biomedical visualization, scientific breakthroughs, and the evolving intersection of art and science. We’ll recap industry highlights, emerging trends, and must-read articles each month to keep you informed and inspired.

To kick things off, let’s take a look back at 2024.

2024: A Year of Innovation in Biomedical Visualization

The past year saw groundbreaking advancements in biomedical visualization, from AI-enhanced medical imaging to immersive 3D modeling in surgical planning. Here are a few highlights:

AI in Medical Illustration – AI-powered tools, like generative design software, are reshaping the field. While some illustrators integrate these tools to enhance their work, ongoing discussions focus on ethics, accuracy in anatomical renderings, and originality. The JAMA Network published an insightful article on AI in healthcare, highlighting the need for safety, inclusion, and sustainability. While there are many perspectives on integrating AI into our healthcare systems, this piece presents one viewpoint worth considering if AI interests you!

Key takeaways:

  • Ongoing safety monitoring is essential as AI models evolve over time.
  • The environmental cost of AI is high, with model training consuming significant energy.
  • AI can widen health disparities if not designed with diverse populations in mind.

To ensure AI benefits all patients, the industry must prioritize transparency, continuous monitoring, and diverse representation in AI development.

3D Printing & Visualization – The integration of 3D-printed anatomical models in medical training and patient education became more widespread. Studies have shown that tactile learning tools improve comprehension for both students and patients. If you’re interested in the world of 3D printing, check out some of these changemakers and explore their work: Sculpteo, 3DSystems, Axial3d, Anatomy Warehouse, and Dassault Systems.

Publications & Research – Notable studies explored how visual storytelling improves patient adherence to treatment plans, reinforcing the importance of effective medical illustration in healthcare. Park et al. explored digital storytelling—a multimedia method of presenting a story—that has gained attention in recent years as a tool for sharing and understanding information among patients, caregivers, healthcare professionals, and policymakers. Their findings suggest that digital storytelling is essential for sharing healthcare information, contributing to shared decision-making, and raising awareness of patients’ health-related experiences. However, concerns remain regarding the accuracy and reliability of some information online, as well as the impact of digital storytelling on knowledge application and implementation.
