May is here—and with it comes a feeling of renewal, growth, and fresh air (literally and creatively). As blossoms open and longer days settle in, we’re reminded of the rhythm of the seasons in both nature and our work. This month, we’re celebrating the powerful role biomedical visualization plays in raising awareness about cardiovascular health, and we’ve got an exciting announcement about a conference appearance coming up in June!
Special Mentions
- May is National Blood Pressure Awareness Month. A timely opportunity to spotlight the cardiovascular system—a masterwork of anatomy and physiology.
- Expect to see stunning visuals of heart structures, vascular systems, and patient-facing illustrations popping up all over the community.

How many miles of blood vessels do you think are in the human body?
(Hint: It’s a mind-blowing number!)
Guess in the comments!
Website Launch Month!
- We’re thrilled to officially open the digital doors to RCDesign Lab! May marks the soft launch of our website and the debut of the Biomed Hub. Stay tuned—there’s much more to come as we begin building out visualisation materials and developing an online store soon!
Highlights in Biomedical Visualization
- From artery cross-sections to wearable tech demos, we’ve seen incredible visuals this month that make understanding blood pressure and heart health approachable for all audiences.
- Medical illustrators are playing a key role in patient education tools and public campaigns, with clear, diverse, and inclusive visuals designed to empower people to monitor and manage their health.
Emerging Trends
- Interactive Cardiovascular Models: Digital tools simulating blood flow and arterial constriction are helping students visualize cause and effect more clearly than ever before.
- Genetic + Anatomical Hybrid Illustrations: A growing trend is blending illustrations of vascular anatomy with genomics, particularly relevant for studies on hereditary heart conditions.
Educational Resources
- Don’t miss Body Banter’s recent mini-episode on communicating heart health with visuals—short, smart, and full of insight.
- For those wanting to brush up on their cardiovascular knowledge or improve their health, check out some free resources by the Libin Institute with the University of Calgary, or the Canadian Cardiovascular Society for excellent professional resources and updates on patient education initiatives.
One to “Know!”
- Though now retired, Bill Andrews remains a towering figure in the world of medical illustration. Over his illustrious career, Bill helped shape the modern landscape of biomedical visualization with an unwavering commitment to anatomical accuracy and visual storytelling.
- Best known for his extensive work in cardiovascular illustration, Bill spent years producing meticulously detailed visuals for the Texas Heart Institute and Surgical Associates of Texas. His illustrations—widely published and deeply respected—have become foundational references in cardiac and surgical education.

Community & Collaboration
- This month also marks some great teamwork behind the scenes as we prep for a special conference presentation in June!
- Working alongside educators and fellow medical artists has made the process even more rewarding.
- Upcoming Events: IAMSE Conference – June 15
- We’re excited to announce that RCDesign Lab will be attending the IAMSE Conference, supporting a collaborative project led by Dr. Valerie O’Loughlin.
- Presentation Title: Genital Embryology Education Redesigned
- Sunday, June 15th, 5:30–7:00 PM
- Join us for an exploration of how inclusive design and visual communication are reshaping embryology education for the better.
Finishing Question / Looking Ahead
Spring invites us to refresh not only our environments but also our approaches. How can we continue to make cardiovascular education more inclusive, engaging, and impactful?
